Introduction to Woodland Coppicing

This one day coppicing course is designed to introduce students to the specific skills and techniques covering basic theory, providing hands-on practical experience and a tree identification session. The course begins with an introduction and basic health and safety followed by a walk through the woods looking at various compartments that have been coppiced over the years and the benefits of coppicing and the types of native deciduous woodland trees. Aspects covered on the course include planning the work area, looking at various devices, building work breaks and coppice restoration, working methods, practical coppicing, material selection, processing, and storage.This course will show you how to take neglected woodland and transform it into a productive coppice with wildlife benefits. It will demonstrate how to cut a coppice plot safely with appropriate hand tools and you will learn to know different trees and understand their value.Arrive 15 minutes prior to a 9:30am start. Depart 4pm, although this is approximate. Directions: Please look at the map featured on the website. What to bring: work clothes, pen and notebook, packed lunch.
