What a great site. It's very clear and user friendly. So often websites are cluttered and confusing. This site is not, so well done on good design.

Democracy, Data and Election Scandals: How do we respond?

Wed 24 Apr 2019, 6.30pm, Workroom 3, University of Sheffield, 38 Mappin St. S1 4DT

Digital campaigning is now normal, but recent elections have resulted in scandal. This event brings together Vote Leave whistleblower Shahmir Sanni, the author of the recent Electoral Reform Society report Reining in the Political ‘Wild West’: Campaign Rules for the 21st Century, and Dr Kate Dommett (University of Sheffield) to explore the implications of online campaigning trends for democracy.

This event is part of the "Our Democracy" strand
of the Festival of Debate 2019, sponsored by Sheffield College in association with The Crick Centre & The University of Sheffield. Free, but please book at the link below.

The Personal is Still Political: a facilitated dialogue

Wed 24 Apr 2019, 7pm, 108 The Moor

Current social and political issues affect us at every level including in our everyday lives. They are mirrored in our workplaces, in our relationships and even in ourselves. More than ever we need spaces for deeper dialogue, opportunities to hear and try to understand one another.

Politicians often present issues in a simple, polarised way, ignoring complexity. Swamped by this kind of news on many important issues, we may find ourselves for or against something, leaving a ‘like’ or ‘dislike’ tag, without deeper reflection - thus reducing ourselves to binary reactions. If this happens constantly, it generates apathy and hopelessness about the future. If you are interested in what creates cohesion or division in Sheffield, join us. You will have the opportunity to engage with others in facilitated dialogue as we explore the topic.

Part of Festival of Debate 2019 in association with Cohesion Sheffield, hosted by not-for-profit social enterprise Opus Independents (which also publishes the Alt-Sheff "Localcheck" column in "Now Then" magazine). Free to attend, but please register using the link below.

"OH YES OH NO"

Wed 24-Thu 25 Apr 2019, 7.45pm, Theatre Deli, 202 Eyre St. S1 4QZ

A show about having sexual fantasies that don’t align with your politics, about trying to understanding what you want, and wondering how the hell to ask for it. Performance artist Louise Orwin asks the difficult questions as she takes you on a surreal joyride through femme sexuality and violence.

Talking openly and honestly about sex, this one-woman show interrogates identity, consent and power play. Features explicit Barbie’n’Ken role-play, pop culture references, and sound design by Alicia Jane Turner. For anyone who has ever struggled to find their sexual voice, or questioned the sexual culture they were brought up in, this dares to speak about a subject which is rarely addressed publicly, especially in the wake of #MeToo.

Age Guidance 16+. Trigger Warning: Show contains description of sexual violence. Tickets £9.07–£11.19.
